Starting September 27, 2026, new EU regulations for warranty information in e-commerce will apply. Shopify merchants must distinguish between two elements: a general notice on legal warranty rights and product-specific labeling for certain manufacturer guarantees.
The implementation does not only affect legal texts. Depending on the product range, the theme, product data, and the final checkout step must be adjusted.
Quick & concise
✓ The harmonized warranty notice will be relevant for B2C shops with physical goods.
✓ The new requirements apply starting September 27, 2026.
✓ The GARAN label only affects specific free manufacturer guarantees of more than two years.
✓ In the online shop, the notice and label must be displayed in color.
✓ Product data, theme, and checkout flow should be reviewed separately.
Two regulations that merchants must separate
Directive (EU) 2024/825 amends the European Consumer Rights Directive. The design and content of the new elements are determined by the directly applicable Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960.
In everyday language, people often talk generally about the warranty label. Legally, however, these are two instruments with different use cases.
The harmonized notice applies generally
The harmonized notice provides information on the key elements of statutory warranty law. This includes, in particular, the EU-wide minimum duration of two years, as well as the note that national law may provide for a longer duration.
For online sales, the implementing regulation requires a colored RGB representation. The components of the official template must not be edited; the included QR code must also remain intact and usable.
Important
Your own text, such as "Two-year warranty", does not replace the harmonized notice. Use the official design in its entirety and avoid translated, shortened, or branding-adapted replicas.
The GARAN label is product-specific
The GARAN label is not automatically required for every product. It must be displayed if the manufacturer offers a commercial durability guarantee for the entire product, at no extra cost and for more than two years, and provides the merchant with the corresponding information.
A paid warranty extension, a warranty of exactly two years, or a warranty only for individual components does not meet these requirements. If the manufacturer has not provided the information, the merchant is not required to search for it on product-specific websites themselves.

How to implement the requirements in Shopify
1. Globally integrate the general notice
The EU Commission describes the notice for online sales as a general, prominent reminder on the website of the seller of the goods. A hard-to-find subpage or an inconspicuous link in the footer should therefore not be your only implementation.
Consider a global theme component that remains visible in areas close to the purchase. Suitable positions can complement product pages, the cart page, or the cart drawer; the concrete implementation should be checked with regard to your national transposition law.

2. Structurally record warranty data
The GARAN label requires, among other things, the warranty duration, manufacturer name, and model identifier. Do not store this information as free description text, but manage it as structured product data.
Shopify metafields can store product-specific information and connect them to theme blocks via dynamic sources. For a robust implementation, separate fields are recommended for status, duration, manufacturer, model identifier, and internal proof of the manufacturer's information.
Practical Check
Request a binding warranty data list from suppliers. Without clear assignment of manufacturer, model, duration, and warranty scope, you risk the label appearing on wrong variants or being missing despite an existing obligation.
3. Display the GARAN label conditionally
The label may only appear on the product page if all requirements are met. For multiple variants or models, the assignment must be so precise that customers can recognize which item the warranty applies to.
The label must be displayed in color online. Only the designated fields for warranty years, manufacturer, and model identifier are editable; titles, symbols, QR codes, and multi-language elements remain unchanged.
A nested format is permitted. The full label must then appear upon the first click, rollover, touch, or expansion – also on mobile devices.
4. Include the final checkout step
For paid electronic orders, the product-specific GARAN label must also be indicated clearly, prominently, and immediately before placing the order. Displaying it exclusively on the product detail page is therefore not sufficient for affected goods.
Check the normal checkout, cart checkout, and accelerated checkout flows separately. Which placement is available in Shopify depends on the checkout configuration, plan, and extensions used; therefore, document the limitations of your current implementation as well.
Which shops and products are affected
The general harmonized notice is aimed at businesses selling goods to consumers. Pure B2B shops are outside this consumer framework; digital content and digital services have their own information requirements, but do not automatically require the same notice for goods.
The GARAN label only affects products with the described manufacturer's warranty. Retailers selling third-party brands therefore need a supplier process, while manufacturers and private-label sellers must review their own warranty promises directly.
Even for used goods, the general notice remains relevant. The official template takes into account that national regulations can provide for a shorter warranty period under certain conditions.
What shop operators should check now
✓ Do you sell goods in a B2C shop and therefore need the harmonized notice?
✓ Is the official, unaltered RGB template for online use available?
✓ Which products meet all four criteria for the GARAN label?
✓ Are warranty years, manufacturer, and model identifier stored structurally in Shopify?
✓ Does the label appear on a product-specific basis and for affected orders immediately before purchase?
✓ Do the QR code, nested view, and mobile display work?
✓ Are accelerated checkouts and different EU markets included in the tests?
Do not perform the check only on individual sample products. Test at least one product without a label, one correctly labeled product, and a mixed cart.
Thinkideas View
Treat the change as a data project rather than a short-term banner task. A global warranty notice can be added quickly, but the GARAN label requires reliable supplier data, clear product logic, and tests all the way to the buy button.
Conclusion
Starting September 27, 2026, selling goods to consumers will require the new harmonized warranty notice. The GARAN label is only used additionally for clearly defined, free manufacturer durability guarantees.
First, review your product range and warranty data. Then you can display the general notice globally and the label in a controlled manner via product data, theme, and checkout.
