Short sales present automated Google Ads campaigns with three different challenges: allocating more budget, anticipating an unusual conversion rate, or neutralizing incorrect measurement data. Anyone who confuses these cases risks unnecessary spend or weak delivery.
This checklist shows Shopify merchants which lever fits when and which decisions must be documented before the peak phase.
Short & concise
✓ Seasonal budget adjustments increase the daily budget for a limited time.
✓ Seasonal conversion adjustments are only intended for significant, short spikes.
✓ Smart Bidding already takes normal seasonal fluctuations into account automatically.
✓ Data exclusions belong exclusively in the event of a malfunction.
✓ Shopify data on sales, discounts, and earnings form the basis for decision-making.
Three tools, three different tasks
Google Ads runs seasonal budget adjustments, seasonal conversion adjustments, and data exclusions in the context of automated bidding. However, the similar-sounding functions intervene at different points in campaign control.

Practical Check
Before making any setting, formulate a complete trigger statement: We expect more demand, a higher conversion rate, or faulty conversion data. If only more demand can be justified, a conversion adjustment is not automatically warranted.
Checklist 1: Prepare the budget for the sale
Identify suitable campaigns
According to Google's current status, seasonal budget adjustments can be set up for Search and Shopping campaigns. The planned increase must last between three and 14 days and generally resets the average daily budget to the previous value after the event.
Check which campaigns are actually limited by budget.
Separate permanent growth budgets from time-limited sale budgets.
Control shared budgets and other settings that might prevent campaigns from being selectable.
Document the starting budget, increase amount, start, and end.
Do not confuse budget with profitability
More budget merely creates additional delivery leeway. It does not answer whether a discounted order is still profitable after cost of goods sold, payment fees, shipping subsidies, returns, and advertising costs.
Therefore, define an economic limit for each offer group in advance. A high target ROAS can also be deceptive if products with widely differing margins are optimized together.
Important
Do not casually make manual changes to the budget during an active seasonal budget adjustment. Google points out that an additional manual change can affect the value to which the budget is subsequently reset.
Checklist 2: Realistically estimate the conversion spike
Only enter exceptional events
Smart Bidding already processes normal seasonal developments on its own. Seasonal adjustments should therefore only be used if a significant deviation in the conversion rate compared to the usual trend is expected for an upcoming sale.
Google describes periods of one to seven days as ideal. For longer phases of more than 14 days, the function may work less effectively; a complete Black Month should therefore not be modeled globally as a single conversion event.
Choose a historically comparable offer rather than the same month of the previous year as a whole.
Compare identical devices, markets, product groups, and discount mechanics.
Calculate the relative difference in conversion rate.
Reduce the estimate if the offer, range, or target audience are not comparable.
Record the start and end based on the actual validity of the offer.

Use Shopify data as a cross-check
Shopify sales reports can display gross sales, discounts, returns, net sales, gross profit, and average order value, among other things. Orders can also be exported as a CSV by date range to compare past promotional windows in more detail.
Do not only look at the conversion rate in Google Ads. Check in parallel whether the earlier peak was driven by new customers, existing customers, unusually high discounts, or individual low-margin bestsellers.
Checklist 3: Establish a contingency plan
Do not abuse data exclusions for optimization
Data exclusions are intended for faulty conversion data, such as after a tagging issue, a website outage, or an incorrect data import. They are not a tool for retroactively removing a weak sales day from the bidding logic.
Exclusions are available for conversion- or value-based Smart Bidding strategies in Search, Display, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns. They affect Smart Bidding but do not remove the affected conversions from the reports.
Define who is authorized to identify and confirm a measurement error.
Log the start, end, affected conversion actions, and campaigns.
Keep in mind that the exclusion must be applied to the clicks to which the faulty conversions might be attributed.
After the correction, check whether new orders are being fully tracked again.
Monitor bids, spend, and goal achievement over the following conversion cycles.
Decision Rule
A sale is not a data error. A tracking outage is not a seasonal conversion effect. Maintain this distinction even if multiple events occur simultaneously.
Checklist 4: Organize steering and escalation
In peak phases, wrong decisions often arise not from missing features, but from parallel changes made by different teams. CRM, shop management, and paid media therefore need a shared workflow plan.

Also define the threshold of deviation at which intervention is required. Spontaneous changes after just a few hours are rarely a reliable steering method given conversion delays and fluctuating order values.
What shop operators should check now
✓ Are additional budgets and expected conversion effects documented separately?
✓ Is every conversion adjustment based on a comparable historical event?
✓ Are the offer duration and adjustment period precisely aligned with each other?
✓ Was the profitability limit calculated after discount and variable costs?
✓ Is there a documented process for tracking or shop outages?
✓ Is it defined who is allowed to change settings during the peak?
Do not test the process for the first time on your most important promotional day. A short, controlled sale can show whether budget resetting, monitoring, and escalation paths work as planned.
Thinkideas View
Use seasonal conversion adjustments as an exception, not as a standard part of every discount promotion. For most Shopify peaks, reliable margin limits, sufficient budget headroom, and a prepared contingency plan are more important than additional signals to the bidding algorithm.
Conclusion
Google Ads offers precise tools for peak campaigns, provided that budget requirements, conversion effects, and measurement errors are kept strictly separate. The right choice protects both delivery and the learning signals of automated bidding.
Create a one-page control sheet now for each planned promotion, including forecast, profitability limit, timeframe, and escalation rules.
